Ready to Make This New Year Extraordinary?
It’s the beginning of a new year and it’s time to hit the refresh and reset buttons!
I am totally in on looking forward to a “new” year, as so many people are-especially after the year we just had with the pandemic and all the political and social unease.
Yet, as tempting as it is to make a list of all the things I want to achieve this year and call them my New Year’s Resolutions, I haven’t done it, nor will I.
Because New Year’s Resolutions don’t usually work.
A study from the UK in 2007 following 3,000 people showed that 88% failed to achieve their New Year’s resolutions at the end of the year, even though more than 50% were totally confident they would succeed.
Not such great results from resolutions, right?
This New Year “thing,” we do, where we want to start afresh, get healthier, be more successful and change our behaviors right from the start of the new year is very interesting.
Seems us humans are innately motivated to survive!
And, the symbolism of leaving behind the “old” year and stepping into a brand new year certainly entices us with the perfect opportunity to make sure we keep surviving by making these “promises” to ourselves in order to assure we’ll make it through another year.
It’s our survival nature kicking in that wants us to do whatever we can to keep going!
Even with our good ole primitive survival nature, we’re still prone to not keeping those “promises” the way we’ve typically set them up.
So, then how do you have a better feeling, brighter year than the last one?
How do we make it extraordinary, make the changes we desire and accomplish the goals we want to achieve?
I’d like to offer a solution that stems from a different perspective.
One that feels expansive and not weighed down with shoulds and can’ts.
What if we took a higher level approach and switched up our thinking from survival to thriving?
Yes, there is still that basic survival instinct that is motivating us in the background.
Perhaps even more since the pandemic, as it brought up a lot of fear and worry to the front of our “collective” minds.
But, if we only think in terms of basic survival, then we’re short selling our potential as human beings.
We are capable of so much more-more vibrant health, more energy, more expansive thoughts, more kindness, more love, more creativity, more positive impact on our environments, and more.
When we expand who we are and what we are capable of, we naturally are taking good care of our well being and setting ourselves up to not only survival, but for new possibilities—and then we thrive!
Instead of making that “list” of resolutions this year, why not create and design your life from a much more inviting place?
When you create intentions that are the umbrellas for the smaller achievable goals and you design your life from those intentions, you’ll find yourself at the end of the year not only feeling satisfied with how your year and your life unfolded, but also thrilled with how well you handled any challenges that showed up and how you created a life filled with so much more ease and joy!
And, you’ll enjoy the journey along the way!
It will be an extraordinary year!
Doesn’t that sound more intriguing than simply writing out a list of resolutions that usually are a reaction from the so-called “negatives” you experienced the year before?
For example, if you are resolving to “stop eating junk food in 2021,” you may have decided this is a good resolution since you are unhappy with your eating behaviors in the past.
It’s not that it’s a “bad” goal, #1-it’s too broad and #2-it doesn’t have a lot of inspiring energy around it, does it?
Additionally, many people make negative focused resolutions, such as “I’m not going to eat any sweets/sugar/cakes/pastry (you name it).”
These types of resolutions consistently remind you of what it is you are no longer wanting to indulge in and they can leave you feeling deprived, like you’re missing out on something and feel less than moving.
Here’s an example of creating an intention that acts as an umbrella for small achievable mini goals:
“I am healthy in mind, body and spirit and am living a life that inspires me.”
Now, what are some steps and further sub intentions you can create to achieve that?
I eat foods that nourish and support my well being.
I now have ¾’s of my plate filled with vegetables and/or complex carbohydrates
I drink at least six 8 ounces of water every day.
I am moving my body everyday and making it a priority.
I do at least 20-30 minutes of some movement/exercise that I enjoy on a daily basis.
I tend to my emotional and mental well being.
I take 5 minute breathing breaks consistently during my day.
I find some time for either reading, listening to music, or doing something relaxing.
These are some examples of how you can create and design your life…and then from here set up some measurable goals.
- 4 days a week, I make sure my plate is 3/4’s filled with veggies or salad.
- Record each day you achieve that…having your umbrella intention as your guide.
Set a goal of starting out with smaller amounts of time for exercises…for 2 weeks, when you’ve achieved that, up the time.
There is so much more you can do in creating and designing a year that will inspire you.
These are just tiny examples.
And, it can be simple and doable, especially with support.
