Watch out for overwhelm! It can rob you of your joy!
Ahh! It’s that time of the year now when things really start moving quickly, if they weren’t already! Clocks were just turned back on Sunday and it’s getting darker earlier and earlier as we get closer to the winter solstice.
Along with the shorter days and longer nights come the season of Holidays for so many of us. This is a time when life can start to feel a bit crazy, if you let it and overwhelm can quickly set in.
This is a time, more than ever, when it is so necessary to practice good self care. And, naturally, it’s during these times, when we are most likely to fall prey to the cultural pressures of so much to do that self care can go out the window and overwhelm gets in and begins to rob you of your joy.
I recently had allowed myself to get into overwhelm and it didn’t feel good at all. I felt stuck. I had stopped doing my daily self care practices, too, when I really needed them most. These are the practices, the things I do, that support me in feeling and being my best self. As a result, everything was hard, life felt a bit dreary and I wasn’t connected into my joy, that’s for sure!
Being part of a group called, 21 Days to Inspired Action, gave me the opportunity to take on the goal of doing my daily self care practices again. When I take time for myself and do an appreciation journal, a success journal and affirmations for the day, I feel so much more capable of handling all the many details of my life. And, that kind of self care for me, also leads me to take good care of myself in other ways, too. I am aware of my physical body wanting and needing activity, so I either go for a walk or go to the gym. This further leads me to want to feed my body with food that not only tastes good, but fuels my body and feeds my overall health and well being.
So you see how the cycle goes? Take good care of yourself, do the things that work to have you feel more calm and grounded and viola! ….everything else becomes easier and the overwhelm disappears. You find more joy and ease in your life and you can do the things you want to do feeling more lighthearted in the process. You connect in with your joy by connecting in with you. By giving you self care, you disconnect from the overwhelm.
Wouldn’t you like the rest of the year to be that way? Even with the Holidays coming one after the other?
