Our Self Talk Matters
As I was thinking about what I wanted to share with you this month—and reflecting on the stress-weight connection I’ve been writing about in recent articles—it hit me just how essential our self-talk is.
What are we telling ourselves, consciously or unconsciously?
After working with clients for over 25 years and reading countless articles on this topic, I can tell you that most of the thoughts we have about ourselves… aren’t all that kind. And the thing is—what we think, say, and believe (yes, even unconsciously) matters.
Not sure you believe that? Try this quick experiment:
Go look in the mirror and say out loud a few really harsh things to yourself—something like:
“You’re stupid.”
“You never get it right.”
“You’re never going to lose the weight.”
Now notice how that feels in your body.
Do your shoulders tighten?
Does your stomach clench?
Do you feel a heaviness in your chest?
That’s your nervous system reacting. Your body is registering those words as stress. It doesn’t feel safe to be bombarded with that kind of inner criticism—and yet, that’s what so many of us do all day long, often without even realizing it.
If you’re trying to change anything in your life—your weight, your habits, your health, your stress responses, or the worry and anxiety that seem to hang around—then self-talk is the place to start. The words you say to yourself are often the breadcrumbs that lead straight to your limiting beliefs.
And once you become aware of those beliefs, that’s when real change becomes possible.
Our inner dialogue is powerful. So as you’ll see in the article below, softening it—lightening it—is key to stepping into who you really want to be in this world.
(And yes, I’m doing some serious up-leveling in this area myself. There’s always more room to expand into our best selves! ?)
As always, I love hearing your thoughts—so if this topic resonates with you, feel free to reach out and share below!
