Maybe the Right Time Is Now
For many years, I’ve used the phrase “Summertime Mode.”
Just saying it seems to stir up images of longer days, vacations, warm evenings, time spent outside and perhaps a little more ease and enjoyment in our lives.
Of course, summer isn’t always carefree.
Schedules change. Routines get disrupted. There may be travel, visitors, family commitments and plenty of other demands on our time and energy.
Still, there’s something about summer that seems to invite us to loosen our grip a little.
To breathe.
To enjoy.
To slow down when we can.
And maybe…to stop putting ourselves off.
Over the past week and a half, I’ve had a rather uncomfortable reminder of how easy it can be to put off paying attention to ourselves.
I’d been experiencing some tenderness in my neck. I noticed it, of course, but it didn’t seem like anything that needed much attention.
Until I woke up one morning in extreme discomfort.
Suddenly, something that had been relatively easy to ignore had my full attention and taking care of myself was no longer something I could put off.
It got me thinking about how often we do this in other areas of our lives.
We live with stress levels that have gradually become our “normal.”
We notice ourselves reaching for food when we’re stressed, tired or overwhelmed, but don’t think too much about it.
We feel a little less energetic, a little less comfortable in our bodies or a little less like ourselves.
None of it seems quite urgent enough to address.
So, we keep going.
Until there comes a point when we realize that what we’ve been tolerating is affecting us more than we thought.
And maybe that’s an important part of taking better care of ourselves: not waiting until something becomes impossible to ignore before deciding that it deserves our attention.
Because how often do we tell ourselves:
I’ll focus on myself when summer is over.
I’ll get back on track when the kids go back to school.
I’ll deal with this after vacation.
I’ll make changes when life settles down.
I’ll start in the fall.
We tend to think of fall and certainly the New Year, as the “right time” to make changes.
But what if summer is actually the right time?
What if Summertime Mode could mean more than vacations, sunshine and taking a break from our usual routines?
What if it could also mean giving yourself permission to take better care of you?
Not later.
Not when life gets quieter.
Not when you finally have more time.
But now.
Taking better care of yourself doesn’t have to mean adding more to your already full plate.
It may mean paying attention to the stress you’ve been carrying for far too long.
Recognizing the ways stress is affecting your sleep, your energy, your eating habits, your weight or simply the way you feel in your own body.
It may mean deciding that you’re tired of waiting for the “perfect time” to feel better.
Because the truth is, there may never be a perfect time.
There is simply the time when you decide that you matter enough to begin.
So, here’s what I’d like you to consider right now:
What would taking better care of yourself look like?
What have you been putting off addressing?
What have you quietly learned to tolerate or accept as “normal”?
And what would feel different if you entered the fall already feeling calmer, more in control and more connected to yourself, instead of waiting until then to begin?
Perhaps this summer, Summertime Mode can be about slowing down, enjoying life and recognizing that taking better care of yourself can be part of that enjoyment, too.
Because feeling calmer, having more energy, feeling more comfortable in your body and more in control of your choices can feel good and rewarding.
Taking care of yourself doesn’t have to feel like another obligation or something difficult you have to push yourself through.
It can be about creating more of what you ultimately want—more ease, more freedom and a greater ability to enjoy your life.
Perhaps this summer is the time to create the space to make a change you’ve been thinking about for far too long.
Because taking care of yourself doesn’t have to wait for the “right time.”
Maybe the right time is now.
